Blender MCP: drive Blender with natural language — a textbook MCP-for-desktop-apps example

TL;DR

Blender MCP is a Blender addon (socket server) plus an MCP server; Claude Desktop/Claude Code send commands to build and edit scenes, fetch assets and run Python inside Blender. Quick install: uvx mcp-for-blender setup. Always save first — one tool runs arbitrary code.

How it works

  1. The addon.py addon starts a socket server inside Blender.
  2. The MCP server (run with uvx) receives Claude's tool calls and forwards them over the socket.
  3. Claude reads scene info, creates/edits objects, materials, lights; pulls assets from Poly Haven, Sketchfab…

Install

# detects clients (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor…) and installs the addon
uvx mcp-for-blender setup

# or add manually to Claude Code
claude mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender

The broader lesson: MCP for desktop apps

  • The “in-app plugin + external MCP server” pattern works for any software with a scripting API (Blender, Godot, Figma, Office…).
  • The agent works on the app's structured data instead of clicking screenshots — faster and more reliable.
